Certifications
Glycerin can carry various certifications, including Kosher, Halal, and sustainability labels (e.g., COSMOS-certified organic). Kosher and Halal certifications confirm that the glycerin complies with specific religious requirements. Sustainability certifications, such as COSMOS, ensure that the glycerin comes from sustainable sources and is produced in an environmentally friendly manner.
Regulations:
Glycerin is also subject to strict EU and pharmaceutical regulations depending on its application, which define precise technical specifications.Example for food-grade glycerin under EU Regulation E422:
• Purity: minimum 99.5%
• pH value: 5.0 – 7.5
• Water content: max. 5%
• Arsenic (As): max. 1 mg/kg
• Lead (Pb): max. 2 mg/kg
• Total heavy metals: max. 10 mg/kg
Kosher:
Glycerin can be certified Kosher if it is derived from Kosher vegetable oils or petroleum and processed using Kosher equipment.
However, a large portion of glycerin is produced from animal fats, which may raise concerns for Kosher certification—especially if the fat is from non-Kosher animals or processed on shared equipment.
There are also Kosher-certified glycerins made from plant-based raw materials.
Halal:
Halal certification confirms that glycerin complies with Islamic purity standards and contains no prohibited substances.
The certification is issued by Muslim organizations and includes inspection of raw materials, production processes, and packaging.
Sustainable:
Some glycerin is certified as organic and sustainable.
This certification ensures the glycerin is derived from sustainable sources and produced in an environmentally friendly way.
Using plant-based glycerin and refining glycerin as a byproduct of biodiesel production are also considered sustainable practices.
In summary: Glycerin can receive different certifications depending on its origin and production process. Kosher and Halal certifications are essential for specific religious requirements, while sustainability certifications (e.g., COSMOS) confirm environmentally responsible sourcing and manufacturing.
